I read up to this point and I thought "aha, a software guy" and later Alex confirmed that. I'd categorize myself as a hardware guy and most software people I talk with seem to think that if software works once then it will always work, otherwise it's a "hardware" problem. I've been burned too many times by registers not being initialized quite correctly so that I don't just jump in and start looking for something wrong in the hardware. Separate ivory towers for the two disciplines makes problem solving more difficult. dave.
