MS Excel is limited to 256 rows (A to IV), at least in Excel 97 & 2000. As to the maximum file size I've worked with files > 100MB in size. Searching Google groups for "maximum excel file size" (quotes required) finds a thread on the MS excel newsgroup that indicates that there may be a problem somewhere between 180MB and 600MB.
