I've done the same thing about five times in the last two weeks, only with analog circuits. I get the thing all soldered up and go to test it, only to realize OOPS! no op-amp in the socket. Another one- when I was in school, it was standard for student groups working on projects which involved serial communication to set up 2 breadboards on opposite sides of the room and then connect them with 1-wire between the two and get very surprised and agitated when their circuit (which works PERFECTLY on one breadboard) becomes unbelievably flaky.
