Digikey sells the MAX186 for about $10 in 100's and $21.50 in one-off. The MCP3208 is 2.63 in 100's and 4.35 one-off. Also consider the PIC16C773 or similar (such as the PIC16C771, which doesn't seem to be very available in plastic), but no S&H on-chip, IIRC.
