Where did "byte" come from?  Pascal does not guarantee a data type named
"byte".  You need to be more specific and define "byte".

I have using Pascal for more than 25 years and haven't never heard that
"byte" can be anything else than 8 bits... Pascal seems to be more stable
than C using different platforms.
