Thanks for that, I can't see the 'memories' option, maybe you are running a different version of MPLAB. By selecting ICD2 as the programmer & doing what you suggest this certainly works though. I can't understand why Microchip have left this issue unresolved, it certainly has wasted a lot time unnecessarily. In order to read the EEPROM you have to go to the debugger/ settings select "memories"menu, select only the "EEPROM" option, then do a read on the chip. Works OK like this on the '452. I expect the '458 is the same.
