This can be done BUT! you must drive all the pics from a master oscillator.
 Crystals or resonators will not stay close enough for it to work very
long. By the time any two have drifted enough to have a "second" between
them, then they have also drifted 1,000,000 instructions apart also,
assuming 4MHz crystals.

There are still a bunch of gotchas due to various start up delays and so on
but I think they can all be dealt with if you are careful.
