I made some units 5 or so years ago using 16c84's they were only for
single pair tracing. just two o/p pins connected via 100nf and 100 ohms
to an American type phone socket mounted at the end of the box powered
by two AA batteries slide sw and a led
The chip outputs an ascending audio tone and flashes the led to show
it's working

I have various leads  I can plug into the socket  to connect to the line
i.e.: crock clips, jack to jack etc.

They are still working fine

Should be simple to make something like this with more outputs and pulse
them to id each wire/pair one blip =wire 1 two blips =wire two up to
five then make the first blip a double  to tell you that your on the
second set of five (does phone cable still use the five color repeat?)
and so on
