You don't have to use the metering part, just leave that off the event times will still work without it. 24V AC garden centre type valves will often work on 12V DC so long as with a (2N2222A) the current is not more than 300mA or so. I think I may still have the original code that could be set for odd or even days automatically, but I decided that it was more flexible to program the watering days in manually as for example where I live the local council has the odd/even number thing plus Monday can't be sprinkled at all.
