Yep, it was a SB128. My initial guess would have been bad chip design with inadequate static protection, but if it works in another machine, it's more likely the PCI fingers are incorrectly placed and the stress of plugging in the microphone moves the card in the socket enough to cause a problem. Guess I should try the dud card in another box...
