I suppose you could implement a GPS & GSM module in one and in that way you
could simply send it co-ordinates to navigate to instead of actually
controlling it in real time :)

Its going to be _rather_ expensive if your favourite GSM network fails
though :P

That's an interesting question. But it begs another question: with even
GPRS/CDMA 1x...could you get enough telemetry data *back* from the aircraft
to make it flyable?

I think you might find it's illegal in some jurisdictions to fly an unmanned
craft out of visual range, too. Although I don't have a lot of hard facts to
back that up ;-)
