Hey, I suppose you could implement a GPS & GSM module in one and in that way you could simply send it co-ordinates to navigate to instead of actually controlling it in real time :) Its going to be _rather_ expensive if your favourite GSM network fails though :P Two south african cents for your thoughts.... But it begs another question: with even GPRS/CDMA 1x...could you get enough telemetry data *back* from the aircraft to make it flyable? I think you might find it's illegal in some jurisdictions to fly an unmanned craft out of visual range, too.
