Many thanks for that keen observation, I have no idea where my datasheet
came from. The new one is about twice the size and includes the missing
line. The read now works but the write is still not working. I'll play
with that a bit more before resorting to another posting.

I suspect you have an old datasheet; there's nothing called EEFS in
the current 18Fxx8 datasheet.
