As a beginner/hobbiest I must say that I'm thrilled not to have to pay anything and get a usable tool suite. I find the gEDA tools (gschem primarily in my case) and PCB worked very well for me on Linux or OS/X. Its wonderful to not have to compromise my OS preferences for another platform which I would prefer not to work on. I realize a **great deal of functionality** might be missing from these tools, but for me - I can work with them. I have source to see how the tools work.
