I use a quality machine-pin socket and solder the wires right into the holes, then run the wires over to the socket, distance not over 6". One problem is that the PICSTART can't deliver a lot of current, i.e. it designed to supply current to one chip only. So if you don't have the PIC isolated, you might have problems. I have enclosed a PDF on how to isolate the PIC from the rest of the board, so ANYTHING will program it. It uses a low-drop schottky diode as the isolator, so there is NO impact on speed or operation. Be sure the have a bypass cap, at least 0.1uF.
