Do not be intimidated. The only new equipment you will need initially will
be a magnifier headset, such as an Optivisor with about 2.5x magnification,
a fine tip for the soldering iron, and some fine solder.

For your purpose with the sensors, if the only suitable ones available are
SMT, then mount them on one of those SMT->DIP converter thingies to use in
your breadboard.
