Probably not quite in the line with the original question, but here
is a camera module that looks like it could interface fairly easily
to the FT245 USB chip (or other parallel interface). Found this link
while browsing links in other PIClist threads:-

...and when that's achieved you have the expensive equivalent of a
cheap off the shelf web-cam.
