When I made a similar suggestion, I was assuming a single PCB with "identical" but interconnected processor circuits. Your two PCBs can't be completely identical if they're communicating via rs232-like protocols. Something will have to set one of them as DTE and one as DCE, even if it's just a "null modem cable."
