IrDA specifies up to 16 Mbps, I think (maybe faster by now).  Definitely
high speed compared to a remote :)  I think the limitation on distance has
more to do with saving power.  I've used both the standard (1 meter, I
think) and low power (10 cm?) versions.  I was able to get about 30 cm out
of the low power version if I was aimed perfectly...Lower speeds didn't
help.
