I'm no expert... I think some (many?) of the IrDA compliant transcievers have a pin for running an extra LED (for more distance, more direction coverage, etc). Running your extra LED off of this output is probably a better idea than driving it directly...This way you know you are getting the prescribed modulation, pulse width or whatever the spec requires...
