I do SMT only and I always prototype with the parts I will be using. Not often, but at times, I have found that the die in the IC is different between PDIP through hole parts and SMT parts. To allow me to prototype and use perfboard and home made PCB's, I keep a complete assortment of IC sockets around and I solder my SMT parts to the IC sockets. This allows me the greatest flexibility in my design and testing phases of any project. And a nice side affect . . . my final product performance always exceeds my prototypes. Just a thought.
