Of course it isn't necessary, but if there's nothing you can do about it, what choice do you have? You mentioned the old version of the compiler will overwrite the PIC18 compiler? You can just install one, move the directory and install the other. You can also make note of the PATH environment variable that gets set by each installer and basically manually install them. But I doubt that will help any of the MPLab 6.2 integration. It's a long shot but have you tried the MPLab 6 update files on Hi-Tech's web site?
