I'd agree with you on a commercial application, however for a "do it yourselfer" I2C is a very attractive solution. I use I2C on my house monitor network and about the only thing I had to do to make it reliable was reduce the speed of the bus, it runs pretty slow (around 20kHz) but is very reliable.
