Well, what I am hearing is that my own method of debugging the chip is about as good as it gets for us hobbyists. :-) In order to not have any particular suspense, let me say what the problem was: I had a jumper wire (attached to a button) which was broken in the middle. Someone had decided to cut it (me?) , then changed their mind. So it didn't show. But when you push it one way, it connects. Push it the other way, no connection. :-( Solved it by putting LED breakpoints in. "I got here. I didn't get here." Narrowing it down. Very primitive debugging. But it worked.
