As others have pointed out, ADCON1 needs to be considered.
The table on p182 of DS39564B (452 manual) shows A & D
configuration vs value in ADCON1. Change to all digital by loading
ADCON1 with 06 or 07. Micros with analogue pins (ADC or
comparators) AFAIK all start up with those pins as analogue
inputs. ADCON or CMCON can be set at the time the PORT and
TRIS registers are if necessary
