Sean, I do not have questions. 6/10 is a passing score for someone who did not take the refrigeration course ? The book I was quoting was Anthony J. Caristi "Practical Airconditioning Equipment Repair" from McGraw-Hill. What you affectionately call bomb charging is what he says is the best way, after using a vacuum pump on the unit. From what else I read he is probably right. If charging by weight using a vacuum first is called bomb charging then what is the proper name for charging by ear/experience ? Blast charging ? ;-) The plumbing for split a/c units is copper tubing usually 1/3" and sometimes 1/2" with external neoprene insulation. Still at 15at working pressure those things look dangerous to me. I do not know what the local policy on R12 is. I would not be surprised if it is still being used on old equipment. I have used refrigeration compressors as vacuum pumps (rough vacuum). Two in series should get you to 1x10^-3 after a while.
