FYI hpgl is well supported under Linux and there are utilities to convert between hpgl and other formats. I also read somewhere about a GPIB card that is supported under Linux. Maybe someone else has the details or use a search engine. Iow, it should be feasible to replace the plotter with a pc running linux (maybe it's already there) with a GPIB interface run in slave mode and use native tools to handle the output format. Building an interface from scratch using a parallel port and standard HCMOS buffers and writing and testing a driver from scratch is a 4-8-hour job.
