It does use up water, so you should pay attention to the level. Don't add water to a discharged battery, otherwise you will probably add too much(water level changes with state of charge). If you don't like boiling, you can stop charging at 14.4 volts and start again when it falls below 13.9, and repeat until the duty cycle gets minimal.
