Yeah have not got this far yet, but the nature of the problem is that you
have to turn the plotter off to recover from the error, which rather hampers
heating/cooling to turn the fault on/off, as it only occurs when the pen is
moving, and once it fails it considers the failure to be fatal.

Certainly a thought which may be worth pursuing. May make it easier to
decide just which bit is at fault if I can exercise one axis at a time.
