If I remember correctly, I think the STK500 was superceded by the STK501(?). I've used the STK200, STK300, and STK500 all with excellent results. I think ATMEL pulled support for the '500 about the time I was using it (Q4/01-Q1/02). You might give ATMEL a call (or email) and inquire about that.
