1. Select the relevant resistor for the required current .
2. Place a 1N4148 or similar low voltage diode in series with the LED
    to save the LED from Peak inverse voltage which in some cases is 5
    Volts or less.
3. It  works 8-))

The cap might serve as a filter for dc during the diode blocking phase
