IIRC, the analysis was something like "humans can detect optical events with greater than statistical probability at light levels that are estimated to only provide a very small number of photons (<10) to the optical receptors (corresponding to some greater numbr of photons in the actual event.") That's pretty impressive, but it's not quite what I'd call "perceiving" or even "resolving" single photons.
