This sounds wrong.

Yes - the early 16c5x parts are parallel programmed.

But I have a fist full of 12c508(509), 12ce673, 16c73(74)(77), 16c71 (the
first PIC I ever used!) - all are /JW devices with windows and all are
programmed serially.  Certainly the Tait programmer works - I suspect many
other hobby-type programmers work also.
