I have often thought of using a stepper motor for such a switch. The magnets give a good detent action and if you amplified the output on the input coils, would you get a pulse? And thinking of a car radio, a small joy stick could skew the frequency as well as adjust volume. The switch on joystick could put the current station in memory if held down for a long period, and a short press could advance to next station in memory. Could Velcro joystick on your knee for ease of use.
