I used the P16PRO40 for several months with in circuit programming and it worked just fine. I used a DIL socket as an header, wires of 10-12" and a plug at the other end that plug into the board. If I recall correctly, I even did not have to unplug the programmer when running the firmware (currently we are using Warp13a and have to disconnect the plug each time after we program the PIC).
