I just used a relay driven from the uP which, if it failed would give control to the transmitter. I used a channel from the transmitter to switch the relay to determine whether the uP or the transmitter had control. Simple, but effective and safe. BTW, you building a UAV or what? I've got a UAV in the basement I've got to finish one of these days...
