After looking into this a bit, it seems that the OE Quotefix software I
installed as recommended by several people on this list has the added
feature of "improving" lines with leading spaces.  I installed it to deal
with other problems of Outlook Express.  Oh well, I guess there's no one
universal solution (sigh).
