Speaking of IrDA transceiver modules, Vishay Telefunken makes a pretty nice
little package that includes everything you need.  It is surface mount and a
little less rugged that some of the "tin box" Ir receivers that you can
find, but it has everything built right in.

They aren't too expensive, but can be a little hard to find.  I think Newark
carries them.
