Mike, I'm sorry to see your attitude to my post. I did mention in an earlier posting that I searched through their application notes, but could not find concrete guidelines on the use of transceivers. That is why I posted here in the first place; to ask the experts. I still feel that Microchip could have added a single sentence to the datasheet saying something like "Running the USART in asynchronous mode to connect via RS232 to DTE equipment such as computers, will require the use of a line transceiver. See application note xxx for an example". As for the circuit itself, it is now functioning with full bi-directional communication to my PC.
