Alright folks.  This should be the final report.

It appears that Redhat7.2 did have problems, even though Eagle was the ONLY app that bombed (refresher:  solidly froze the machine during library search).  Just finished installing Redhat8 and Eagle has been doing everything I've asked it to for the last hour or so.  That's creating a new project, new schematic, adding lib parts, creating board, autorouting, etc.
