I have made a minor update to the PIC development environment at
http://www.embedinc.com/pic/dload.htm.

I now believe that recent problems reported here were due to the MPLABDIR
environment variable not being set.  Better error messages are now emitted
by ASMPIC, and a note about MPLABDIR added to the web page where the
environment is downloaded.
