Then remove the slivers with suitable cutter and clean up with a file. These sort of punches are not designed to be cutting on only 3 sides AFAIK, so you need to do it like this, otherwise the punch may have one side trying to chew out the receptacle part of the punch with increased wear/loss of cutting edge.
