I've seen and tried several of the Sharp S101 series parts and wan't very happy with them - they fit the description of 'a cheap solution' well. I seem to recall varying output delays in response to input and other problems that don't come to mind so quickly (made me suspect lots of parasitic capacitance, poor DV/DT immunity or???). You may not want to hear this, but Radio Shack once sold them thru their distribubtion network - and perhaps still does by RSU or their commercial division. I don't know if this is a viable source for you. I'd do as the others have said - Opto22 makes a fine product - of course it costs more, but you can bet it will do what the data sheet says.
