Thanks Alan, I forgot about Maxim and Analog Devices but have looked now and still didn't find the right one. Need 3V, 16 bits or more, 8 pin SOIC, cheap, lowish power, simple interface, available. DAC's for audio don't need the DC accuracies required by other applications too. Maxim have some nice new ones in a teeny tiny package but I'll try to avoid that. Thought there would be oceans of similar things around but apparently not. I've found a source now for the TDA1545A in 8 pin DIP, which might be OK.
