Go to http://www.digikey.com and search for 'PIC microcontroller'. Under the IC section you'll find nearly 4400 entries. When you click the link, the filter pops up. BTW I know this because I quickly did this search got young master Gies a few days ago when he asked the same question about the 16C55. Here's the problem. After the 16C5X 27 pin family, microchip pretty much abandonded the 600 mil 28 pin format. The physical package is the toughest problem. So I used trhat to narrow down the search. I picked 28-DIP from the Package/Case filter. That leaves only two choices: the original 16C5[57] parts that you're trying to replace and the 18F2320 family. Choosing the 18F chips gives three results, with one (18F2320) in actual stock. That's how I did it. An aside. Your choices get much better when going with the 300 mil 28 pin format. So maybe an adapter along with a 16F876 or similar may be the ticket. Finally be aware that the software is going to be incompatible no matter what you do.
