This is definitely an interrupt problem. Something has changed in your OS configuration (or bios) since it worked properly. Adding another card, i.e. a scanner, network card, modem, etc., or playing with the bios settings has caused the problem. Depending upon your OS, you could look at the device settings and map your IRQ's and find which card is camping on the sound card IRQ and possibly change it.
