It's been a while since I installed the El Cheapo software. I do remember having a few problems, but I can't remember if that was with Windows 2000 or ME. From what I can remember, every time I ran the installation programme, it would prompt me to install the VB upgrade, despite having already done that about six times! I got around it by simply copying the contents of the CAB file into a folder in my "Program Files" directory. You can then create your own Start Menu item, if you want. It's not a very 'clean' method of installation, but it does work. Don't forget to install the Port Interface drivers as well. Since the cover PCB is no longer really recommended now and the fact that I don't like building on prototype board, I designed a universal PCB for programming any PICmicro from 8pin to 40pin - not very sophistacted (with a bank of slide switches on one side of the board) but it looks tidy and sits nicely on my desk (being no bigger than the original ElCheapo PCB). It definitely works using Windows 2000, so you should eventually find success yourself! Regards, Mark Brown > >Does anyone here use the El Cheapo programmer?
