See the schematic for the HOS PIC project at
http://www.embedinc.com/pic/hos.htm.  This shows a 16F876 connected to a
MAX232A equivalent.  The PGD and PGC pins are left open on this schematic,
so you could connect them, MCLR, and Vdd to a connector to program the
chip in circuit.
