We try very hard to steer away from a) and achieve c), and I think we succeed most of the time. Although I'm not sure what your objection is to b). Most authors write because they're trying to get some kind of exposure or name recognition, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it means they're motivated to do a good job.
