Why all the guessing about what US$0.49 per chip means? In August 2002, they sent me basic information after I *contacted* the product information center. $0.49 per unit if you commit to 25k units per year on mask ROM parts. And no cheap DIP versions available (at that time) for hobbyists. Interesting part especially regarding a very low power RTC. But I haven't compared it power-wise to the 12F675 as a battery-powered RTC, yet. -g William Chops Westfield wrote:Does anyone here have real working experience with the MSP430 chips?? there's a relatively active yahoo group about the msp430 (called "msp430")\ Not as good as piclist, but with a relatively good signal/noise ratio. Specifically re operating speed/power as compared to a PIC? Having browsed the datasheet and instruction set i'm still confused as to how many clock cycles/mips etc and how an MSP430 at 8MHz xtal might compare to a PIC 14-bit core at 20MHz xtal. I thought that the mips/clock cycle were pretty easy, but the relationship between crystal and internal clock frequency can be a bit complex. With an 8MHz crystal, though, the options are somewhat restricted. It's all the options you have for generating 8MHz (for example) from a 32kHz crystal that get complicated. And any experiences with the low price end of the range, pref OTP etc. I've seen the TI website claim of "prices starting at $0.49" but i've not seen a lot of evidence to back that up yet. It seems to me that at moderate quantities, you get the best price by looking for 'deals' (ie on ebay: 16c57s for less than $.50 each: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4663&item=2508795198&rd=1 ) while at high quantities, you start "dealing" with your distributers, and get prices that are based on ... complex issues, and rather subject to change. I don't like it much; if TI says it costs $0.49 in 10000s, I want there to be a distributer who I can send $5000 and get my chips...
