While this may be a shot in the dark, signal 11 errors during
compilation usually indicate a problem with memory.  GCC is such a
memory hog that it will often bring out latent memory corruption that
would otherwise go unnoticed.

Combined with the requiring of a second boot sometimes, and disk
corruption, I'd lay good odds that this is the problem.
